Spring Break Girls' Trip: WDW

Last fall, Mark's mom decided to organize a trip to Disney World for the girls, and she was generous enough to include me! They picked the week of Katie's spring break to go, which happened to be the same as my spring break. Heidi was able to skip one week of her classes, so the four of us were able to embark on a great adventure and make some memories together!

Our trip included 4 days of park hopping at WDW plus one day at Universal's Islands of Adventure, and a travel day on either side. Here's our basic itinerary:
  • Sunday--travel day, shopping at Disney Springs, and dinner at Portobello Italian Restaurant
  • Monday--morning at Epcot, lunch at Tokyo Dining, and Hollywood Studios for the afternoon, a quick dinner, and Star Wars fireworks
  • Tuesday--morning at Animal Kingdom, lunch at Flame Tree Barbecue, late afternoon and evening at Magic Kingdom with dinner at Cinderella's Royal Table followed by the Celebrate the Magic show and Wishes fireworks
  • Wednesday--Universal Studios, shopping at Disney Springs, and dinner at Grand Floridian Cafe
  • Thursday--morning at Magic Kingdom, lunch at Be Our Guest, and afternoon and evening at Hollywood Studios, with dinner at Mama Melrose and Fantasmic!
  • Friday--morning at Magic Kingdom, lunch at Casey's Corner, and afternoon and evening at Epcot, with dinner at Beaches and Cream plus Illuminations fireworks
  • Saturday--travel day (Mom and Katie went back to Disney Springs for shopping and lunch before their late afternoon flight)
Overall, I think everyone had a great time. I'm not sure anyone else in the group has become as much of a Disney fan as Mark and I are, but each of us had a few highlights (along with some challenges!).

The biggest issue was that Heidi came down with a stomach bug that had her cooped up in the hotel room for most of Tuesday and part of Thursday, and just not feeling well otherwise. She was able to see each park, though, and she was really good-natured about the whole thing. We were all glad it didn't get worse, and that no one else got sick. Mom was dealing with some hip pain, but she really powered through and walked all around everywhere despite it. Since coming home, it sounds like her chiropractor has improved the pain greatly. I had a little bit of knee pain, but managed to keep everything under control with just two days of taking my arthritis meds. I also got a weird rash on my ankles on the last day that went away shortly after coming home (apparently this isn't uncommon--some call it the Epcot rash, which is where I got it! It's more formally known as golfer's vasculitis). All that said, Katie held up better than the rest of us; just a touch of sunburn and a few rides that jostled her shoulder. So...those were the rough patches!

But the highlights included several of the rides--Heidi's favorite was Tower of Terror; Mom enjoyed Test Track. We also had some wonderful meals--Tokyo dining was a big hit. The weather was gorgeous--cool in the mornings and evenings, no rain at all. And we had a few lovely Disney surprises, like a ride over to our hotel building with the luggage delivery guy on arrival day and unexpected Fantasmic! dinning package tickets and a bonus Fast Pass from our server at Mama Melrose. Of course, the main thing was just spending the time together! Given that the 4 of us shared one hotel room for a week, everyone got along so well. We had lots of great conversations, and I'm sure we'll enjoy reminiscing whenever we get together (but hopefully not in a way that makes the guys and Heidi's kids feel too bad about not being there!).

Ok, now for the pics! Since we did jump around a bit from park to park, I'll post photos by category instead of  in chronological order.

I'm going to try to replicate this at home one of these days.

Katie always picked cute desserts :-)

As you can see, we had a great time! Lots of beautiful scenes, entertaining shows, fun rides, and delicious food. Plus, great company all along the way!

Thanks again, Mom and Dad, for treating us to this fun trip and all the memories we made together!

Winter Break

School started on Monday, so the break is behind me now, but I wanted to make sure to post a few pics at least.

As usual, we spent about 10 days back in Albuquerque for Christmas. Overall, we had a great time, though I was fighting a nasty cold the whole time we were gone. I even lost my voice almost completely on Christmas Eve and Christmas day, so that was pretty disappointing. Everyone took good care of me, though. :-)

Our visit was a bit different from usual because Mark's parents had recently sold their house and were preparing to move. They actually left ABQ the day after Christmas to go look for a new house in Missouri. So we ended up dividing our time a little differently than usual (spending most of our time with his family for the first few days and with mine after Christmas, but keeping our usual Christmas Eve/Christmas Day traditions) Despite the extra bit of hecticness, I think we all enjoyed seeing each other as much as always.

Some highlights for me this year were the Mother-Daughter Tea my mom hosts, spending a whole morning catching up with Becca, shopping (for tea with Mom and Grandma and for clothes with Grandma), enjoying all the NM and family foods, the big snowstorm we had, and celebrating Mark's graduation (again).

Here are a few pics from my camera and Mark's brother's (I don't have anyone else's yet). Every year, I tell myself I should take more pictures. Here, I did really well with the Tea and Christmas morning, but not so well with the rest of the trip.

Mom got a selfie stick in her stocking. It was a big hit.

We came home late on New Year's Eve and had a few leisurely days of catching up on housework, unpacking all our new treasures, and generally vegging out before going back to work. I also did one short afternoon of placement testing for ESOL and hosted an open house (my favorite excuse to cook up tasty treats!).

Mark started back up with his Monday afternoon work at Wauseon high school on the 4th, and I went back to teaching on the 11th. My schedule is almost identical to last semester's, so I feel like I've been given a "do-over"! I am really pleased to get the chance to teach these classes again, but feeling more like myself, and hopefully staying healthy all the way through. So far, we're off to a good start--I've even been walking to school again. :-)

Congratulations, Dr. Cook!

After successfully defending his document (available here) in October, Mark is graduating this semester! The graduation ceremonies actually happened last night/this morning, but he decided not to walk. I thought it was important, though, to do something to celebrate, so I talked Mark into letting me throw a little party. We dreamed up a big menu and he invited his friends who are still in the area as well as a few of mine that he's interacted with, and we had a really good turnout. As I usually do, I managed to get pictures of the food, but forgot all about taking some pictures once the guests started arriving. Anyway, here's what we ate:

Also, this is what I made for Mark for his graduation gift:

Next time you see Mark, I hope you'll greet him with hearty congratulations for this huge accomplishment. Also, feel free to call him Doctor. :-)

Fall Wrap Up

I don't know if I've ever been so happy to make it to the end of a semester! There are always ups and downs, but this was one of the most challenging seasons I think I've faced. Still, there have been lots of blessings, too, and I want to be able to remember it all.

This fall was my first semester teaching exclusively GSW classes (last year, I taught a mix of GSW and ESOL). As it turned out, this meant my schedule was extremely streamlined, which enabled me to keep on top of my work as I was managing my health issues. I was teaching the course for the second time, and made it more my own, which was really enjoyable. I liked all of the major assignments I did, and I am looking forward to teaching a very similar schedule in the spring, making some small adjustments, but keeping the same big picture.

One of the things I enjoyed most was a unit inspired by Gretchen Rubin's book Better than Before. For the problem-solution essay, I had students focus on habits: either a problem they could solve in their lives by starting a new habit or a habit in their lives that was problematic and they wanted to change. We read some blog posts by Gretchen Rubin, a chapter from Charles Duhigg's book, and a scholarly article on habit change, and the students did their own research about their specific habits. They wrote about all kinds of interesting things: procrastination, smoking, eating, fitness, nail biting, even making friends. Plus, several students actually did make changes in their habits as a result of writing the essay. It turned out really well! I was also really pleased with how my new final portfolio assignment went, and, as always, I enjoyed grading the multimodal reflections I have them do at the end of the semester.

Of course, the other big part of the last few months has been my health struggles. I think I've already shared a bit about that here, but basically, I was having a lot of trouble getting around from August to October because of some extreme swelling in my knee. Once I saw a rheumatologist and got on some new medication in late October, things got better quickly, but it seems like it will take some more time to really get back to normal. On the plus side, I am walking much more normally now, so I've walked to and from school and with Mark a few times. I don't seem to be ready yet to try more strenuous exercise, but I am doing some physical therapy exercises at home to help me keep working on my range of motion and rebuilding the muscle strength I lost in my right leg. I'll see the doctor again in late January and see what he thinks then. Also, I'm so thankful to be back to normal with eating and everything after the worst stomach bug (plus colitis) that I've ever had back in November. Overall, I spent a lot of time on the couch this fall, and not much time in the office or socializing. I've been working my way through the Gilmore Girls series on Netflix (and I think I'll finish it this weekend). I also got into the Great British Baking Show and have read quite a bit. Those things have been a silver lining of sorts, I guess, but here's hoping the next few months will have fewer medical issues!

While all that was going on, Mark was juggling a new job teaching marching percussion 4-5 days a week at a school an hour away. He was also taking care of a lot of stuff around the house that I couldn't do (cleaning, shopping, etc.) and running me around to school and to one doctor after another. It made me so thankful to have a supportive partner to help me through everything. I couldn't have managed without him! (But I think we're both really glad I'm getting back to normal).

Mark has been enjoying this job in Wauseon, though it's reminded him that working with high schoolers isn't what he'd like to do in the long term. It seems like he's made some good connections in the area though, and that the band director and band boosters really appreciate the work he's doing, which is great. Although I wasn't well enough to tag along to anything he did during marching season, he has arranged to stay on for concert band (just one day a week now), and I did get to go to their Christmas concert last weekend. In addition to this job, he's had a few paid gigs with the college/community groups in Defiance, too.

But the biggest news of this semester, of course, is that Mark defended his document back in October and is graduating this semester! He's worked so hard and overcome so many obstacles in getting this degree; I can't put my excitement into words. We're feeling optimistic as he continues to apply for college percussion professor job openings. There have been a few postings already, and we expect several more over the next couple of months. He's been on this path for so long, and I'm really looking forward to see what opportunities God has planned for him next.

On a sad note, though, Mark's percussion professor, Dr. Schupp passed away last week after a difficult fight with cancer. He had been teaching this semester, but his health declined really quickly in the week before he died. Mark was able to see him in hospice, though, and say his goodbyes. It's a bit hard to process this loss, but we are thankful to know he was a believer and is now cancer-free and pain-free in heaven. We went to the funeral this afternoon.

Overall, through all the challenges, I've been so thankful to have Mark by my side! Now, I'm really looking forward to sharing the holiday season with family and friends, then having a bit more time to rest and recharge before starting fresh in the spring.
