It just didn't seem like summer without a road trip to Missouri, so Mark and I set out after he finished work last Friday to drive down to Springfield and visit his family. Mark's parents moved there early this year, but this was our first visit to their new house. We were happy to see Katie, Heidi, Jeremy, Hannah, and Zack, too, as well as Aunt Sue and Gran. It was especially fun to be there to help Mom celebrate her birthday.
The new house is beautiful, and it seems like Mom and Dad are getting pretty close to settled in. Dad is enjoying retirement, and they've found a church to attend. I think they are both glad to be closer to their parents, which was the main reason they left NM. Katie's got a great summer internship, and Heidi's making progress taking classes in her degree program now. It was nice to spend time catching up with everyone!
We also got to experience 4th of July--it was wild! For us NM kids who grew up with major restrictions on fireworks, we couldn't believe what people were shooting off in their yards out there! Dad bought a whole bunch of bottle rockets and firecrackers for us, plus some roman candles and other fireworks. Now I know what all those things look like--growing up, I just knew they were off limits! From Mom and Dad's driveway, we saw all kinds of huge fireworks in the neighborhood and beyond. It was really impressive (though I was also very glad that it had been raining a lot in the days leading up to the 4th).
Mom and Dad also took us around town a bit. Mom took Hannah and me to the mall where we happened to catch the farmer's market. Dad took Mark and me to see Tarzan in a theater that has reclining chairs for every seat! We tried a few of their favorite restaurants, like Pizza House (St. Louis style pizza) and The Big Slice (NY style pizza), and some new ones, like D'Arpino's. My favorite was Black Sheep, where Mark and I split a tasty burger and tried smoked french fries. Of course, we also enjoyed frozen custard at Andy's.
It was a quick visit, but it's always good to see family!
