WDW 50th Anniversary Vacation 2022

It has taken me far to long to put together a blog post about our big vacation this year, but here we go!

me & Mark at Magic Kingdom

Since our first trip to WDW together, back in 2007, when Grandma and Pop-pop took the whole family to celebrate their 50th anniversary, Mark and I have planned to be at WDW for its 50th anniversary in 2021 (that's based on the Magic Kingdom opening in 1971). Well, with COVID upending everyone's plans for the last few years, and the parks themselves having been closed for part of 2020, the 50th anniversary celebration began on October 1, 2021 and continues until March 2023. (Naturally, they wanted a good long window to entice people to visit ;-). So, although we weren't able to make it in 2021, we were there during the celebration, for a nice, long trip at the end of April and beginning of May 2022. These dates were made possible by my Faculty Improvement Leave this spring semester--no teaching, no meetings--so we had the flexibility to take our trip a bit earlier than we could have in a normal semester.

And we had a wonderful time! It was our first big vacation since before COVID (we had, happily, visited WDW in January 2020, with no idea just how glad we'd be that we'd taken the trip when we did!). So between that and the anniversary stuff, we were feeling pretty splurgy. We went to fancy restaurants, including old favorites and the newest, nearly-impossible-to-get reservation. We treated ourselves to a dessert party with reserved fireworks viewing at the Magic Kingdom (both this fireworks/projection show and the one at Epcot were new since our last trip). We bought more souvenirs than usual, many with 50th themes. We got the WDW photo pass, with the ride photos and magic shots that we always see in our account, but never before paid to keep. We also celebrated our upcoming wedding anniversary (18 years!) and the actual anniversary of closing on our house (April 30).

Rather than a play-by-play of the week, here are a whole bunch of pictures (roughly categorized, perhaps somewhat chronological, but otherwise not in any particular order :-).

Let's start in the Magic Kingdom!

You saw this coming: Food!

And lots of it...since we were there for so long. (Even so, there are meals I didn't include here :-).

same meal our first and last day of the trip)

split this for breakfast at the hotel)

three appetizers for lunch at Nine Dragons in Epcot

Mr. Toad's peanut butter mousse cake

one last ice cream sundae before we left!

Pop Century & Miscellaneous

We've stayed at Pop Century for our last few trips, and it's just such a great deal, with excellent transportation. We enjoyed the Skyliner even more than we remembered from 2020 (when it was newly available). And we ended up with a room upgrade, so the building we stayed in was very centrally located--super convenient (plus it saved us a bit of walking).

the larger-than-life play-doh in front
of our building at the hotel

a selfie on the Skyliner--such a quick and fun way
to get around (plus, it was often just us in the cabin!)

Water Pageant (viewed from the Grand
Floridian after our dinner there)

on the monorail (see the guy over my
shoulder in the BGSU t-shirt?! :-)

We really had a great time, and we were totally worn out by the time we came home. But, wow, what a way to start the summer! I don't want the last pic in the post to be the silly one above, so here's just one more:

Kingdom, near the castle, with
magic shot "EARidescent shimmer"
