Linguistics Update

We decided yesterday to go ahead and stay in the Linguistics 201 course. All of us were uncomfortable with missing half of the other class and decided it would be unwise to put extra pressure on ourselves during the first semester. Our program director and the 201 professor will be talking about what extra assignments to give us to bring the course up to graduate level (we'll actually enroll in Linguistics 599, which is an independent study) and make sure that we are prepared for the next class in our program. At this point, it's just nice to have a decision made, and we'll make the best of it from here on out. I do hope this is the last time we'll run into this kind of issue, and that this won't happen to next year's students!

I took an aggressive course load my first semester of grad school and it was a huge mistake. I think you've made the right decision.

Since you are getting the graduate credit, I also agree that this is the best solution. An idea that you might think about is to see if you can get ahold of the graduate class's tests to see if you are really learning as much as you should. Or not. I know that when I was at NMSU I would always have these grand plans for sitting in on interesting classes to maximize my learning, but after a couple of weeks I would stop (I'm not sure if this is a good comparison, but we can always pretend that it is). Anyway, good luck!

Both the director of the EL/L program and the instructor of the Ling 500 course have told us they think we made a good choice, too. Also, the Ling 500 instructor has agreed to give us copies of the problem sets (these are homework--there were no tests) she uses in her class. So we should be able to use those to check that we're learning the same stuff. Thanks for your encouragement, too!
