I've already mentioned the small group we've been going to on Monday nights. We liked the people but really didn't care for the book they're using. So, we were delighted last night when one of the couples asked everyone what they thought of the book. As it turns out, no one's really enjoying it! Apparently, the first few chapters were pretty good, but by the second half (which is about where we came into it), people felt like the authors were 'beating a dead horse.' Mark and I thought the book was too self-help focused and not at all Bible-focused, and the others agreed. So, although the leaders of the study are still out of town, we unanimously decided last night not to finish this book. Next week, the guy who had already volunteered to lead will choose a topic/passage to cover and we'll all bring suggestions for what to study next. It sounds like we may just walk though a book of the Bible, which would be SO much better. I'm thinking about suggesting a precept study or one of the Following God studies. Any other suggestions? Hopefully, the leader will be okay with our decision, but the couples that know him well (we've only met once) think it won't be a problem. I think, now that we're changing direction with the materials, Mark and I will stick with the group and enjoy getting to know the other couples better.
Some other good news--Mark has been talking with his friends who teach at high schools, asking if they would refer students to him for lessons. It sounds like some of his friends have students interested in taking lessons, so hopefully they will sign up with Mark. Last night, we made some business cards for him to pass out. Since we have the marimba and snare drum at home, this would be an ideal work option for Mark. Plus, he'll make a great hourly wage and have some flexibility in scheduling. He's hoping to have a few students even by the end of the week, which would be great!
