First, I have to admit that I'm proud that I actually spelled "miscellaneous" right in my title the first time. Spelling's not my strong suit, even though I teach English for a living. (Which means that when I start finding a student's spelling distracting, it's pretty bad). I do, however, find punctuation mistakes excessively annoying, which is why today's Web of Language post was a nice reminder that there are more important things to talk about when it comes to writing. Despite this, I will still be reminding my students tomorrow about the punctuation patterns we've covered this semester for compound sentences.
Speaking of my students, I can't believe we're more than halfway through the semester. Overall, I think I can say it's been a good semester, but I have had to deal with an unusually high number of problems with academic dishonesty. Those issues have been particularly frustrating, so I'm now planning to spend the last part of my writing classes reading and writing about this topic. I figure if I have to spend so much of my time each week thinking about the issue, I may as well build it into my course planning and make the students think more about it, too. (Maybe then they can avoid repeating their mistakes in the next level). If anyone spots an interesting story in the news about any type of academic honesty issue, please send it my way, so I can add it to my collection!
On a completely different note, I've been meaning to share a website I discovered several weeks ago now: http://www.gojee.com/. It's a food/recipe website that I've pretty much become obsessed with. You sign up for a free account, then you can flip through beautiful, full-screen sized photos of all kinds of interesting recipes. I find it as interesting as watching the cooking shows I've become so hooked on on the Food Network. The site collects these photos (and the accompanying recipes) from food bloggers. So I've also discovered a few new food blogs to turn to for inspiration when it comes to planning our menu. The site also allows you to mark favorites, and to enter ingredients--either those you dislike, like, or have on hand, as you browse. If you like food or cooking (or pretty pictures of food! :-), you may want to check it out. I don't think I've actually cooked anything from the site, but that's always been part of my problem--more recipe collecting than preparing!
